Connections
So I was thinking about the Gilmore Girls and (for some reason) was remembering the weird roommate Rory has during her freshman year, and it hit me: that girl is Cindy from the Brady Bunch movies (the second of which is quite good)! I looked it up and sure enough, it’s her. Ahh, there’s nothing like placing someone to make my busy mind feel temporarily at peace.
Kindred Spirits
This morning at Zion’s VBS I was asked if I was working this afternoon. I promptly replied in the affirmative only to realize a second later that they had meant would I be working at Zion this afternoon, which changed my answer to no. I was, however, scheduled to work at Office Max this afternoon. Yes, I’m once again behind the old cash register. And thus I realized: in my mind, I “work” at Office Max, while I “go in” to Zion. Huh.
(I love finding kindred spirits in the daily comics!)
So yeah, I’m happily back at Office Max for the summer. No, I really do like it. I know my job well and usually don’t mind doing it... at least I don’t mind putting in just a couple’a days each week (and working my more lovely job at the church office the rest of the time).
My return was made sweeter by a few things:
1) My bosses have hereby dubbed me “Super Kate”, which they apparently call me both in front of and behind my back (and in prudent moderation -- meaning hardly ever)
2) My first troubling customer (who stormed out because he had to wait through one regular-length transaction before he was helped) was asked “what his problem was” not by me (I was busy apologizing, etc.), but by the woman in front of him -- who nonetheless did so with great forbearance. He really made his point though, eh? *sigh*
3) Four hours back on the job and they had me train a newbee on the register -- a supervisor-to-be, no less!
Yeah, this job's all right. After all, "he also serves who only stands and waits," right?

Real-Life Story Problems with the Ghormleys: Juggling Cars & Schedules
Regarding Sunday, June 19th, 2005
The Predicament:
Dad needs to go to Des Moines to preach a Sunday morning sermon. He will leave around 6am and return at 3pm or so. Mom needs to go to Zion at 7:30am to practice with the worship team. Kate needs/wants to go to Zion for 1st service to make sure that the new PowerPoint computer is working. She must be there to teach the 3rd grade Sunday School class. She must stay after 2nd service for a VBS meeting. Anne needs to go to Zion at 7:30 to practice with the worship team. She must be there to co-teach the 1st grade Sunday School class. She must arrive at LHS (with her luggage for the week) for the Super (music) Camp initial staff meeting at noon, meaning she must leave Zion after the worship team finishes/before the sermon 2nd service. She does not need a car this week and we can’t afford to have one sitting in the LHS lot all week, so we'll have to drop her off or perform a car pick-up later. Joe needs to be at Sunday School and at one of the services. He’d prefer to go to 2nd service. He would walk from home to Sunday School, but he has a limp from his summer school gym class. The family has access to three cars: the Van (the red van), the Kia, and the Barge (the white van). We can add one more vehicle to the mix (Bess’s car) if we think an additional car is worth having to coordinate Bess’s needs as well... It’s worth it. Bess needs to go to Zion at 7:30 to practice with the worship team. She must be there to co-teach the 1st grade Sunday School class. She’d prefer to leave after worship team finishes/before the sermon 2nd service. So what’s the best course of action?
The Plan:
Dad takes the Kia to Des Moines. Mom & Anne take the Van to Zion for worship team practice. Bess takes her car to Zion for worship team practice. Kate takes the Barge to get to 1st service. Kate comes home in the Barge during 1st service (after she’s sure that PowerPoint is working). Kate brings Joe in the Barge for Sunday School and 2nd service. Bess & Anne leave in Bess’s car after the choruses 2nd service, stop at home and get Anne’s luggage, and Bess drops Anne off at LHS. Mom & Joe leave Zion together after 2nd service in the Van. Kate leaves Zion after the VBS meeting in the Barge.
Whew! Every once in a while it gets a bit tricky like that. Maybe it's not anything all that extraordinary, but it sure does make my head hurt.
me & Howard
I saw The Aviator this weekend (the one in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays Howard Hughes). The film was pretty good, but its greatest effect on me was that it forced me to finally stop and consider Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which apparently Hughes suffered from. (Should I have known that?) I have always thought that I had touches of OCD, but I figured it more for a personality quirk than a diagnosable condition.
I was still kind of “whatever” about OCD after the movie, but then I put in the special features disc and found myself heading straight for the two OCD features, and then heading upstairs to take an online test. :o) I still don’t think I have anything severe (and I’m obviously not embarrassed about it), but I definitely saw a lot of me in the test -- and many of the traits were things I hadn’t thought to connect to a possible OCD, like having a specified order for certain tasks (isn’t that just efficiency?) or unnecessarily re-reading and re-writing (that's just me being thorough, right?) or checking and re-checking things like locks, the stove, etc. (it's just common sense, isn't it?). And to an extent I do still consider these things harmless and normal personality quirks (which, nonetheless, ought not to be thoughtlessly indulged), but the number of hits I had on the test makes me think that something might actually be going on. At any rate, whatever is going on is minor and mostly changeable, I believe, so I’m not too worried.
So in short: I have always kind-of-sort-of thought I was obsessive-compulsive, and now I kind-of-sort-of think I am. Hmm.
Fabulous Florid-ahh
